NASMOTO Extreme Cycle Jam Racing Recap
Santa Monica, CA - Blue skies and warm sunny weather greeted the competitors at the 3rd annual 07 Extreme Cycle Jam NASMOTO contest in Nashville at the Music City Motorplex on September 2nd with seven motorcycle and two ATV classes.
SMX Open Final
The most inspired racing of the day was conducted by young Miramar, Florida-based David Gaviria in the SMX Open class on his 450cc Honda racebike. At the start of the race Gaviria crashed in the first turn and watched his competitors speed by as he remounted and fired up his race bike.
Jason Baldwin then took the point during the first few laps running his NASMOTO KTM 560SMR rental bike. He jammed his front brake in an altercation in the whoops section and dropped out of contention.
Gaviria then put on a show by putting his head down and running the fastest laps of the event and taking the checkered flag in the 10 lap affair.
Since the SMX Open contained all three class displacements including 250cc, 450cc and 610cc race bikes, fans saw passing everywhere on the track with the big bikes taking the advantage on the Music City Motorplex asphalt banking and then often losing a position in the tighter dirt section.
Cory Gabbert from Mandan, ND riding a KTM 560SMR kept pace with Gaviria and attempted to challenge the leader but faded away toward the end of the contest, coming in a solid second. Rounding out the podium was Chase Guthrie of Mentone, IN riding a Kawasaki.
The Nashville Music City Motorplex is located at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds and features a 5/8 mile asphalt track with high-speed 18 degrees banked turns. On the asphalt section, the SuperMoto racers ran up to 100 mph before they would haul down two gears for the chicane on the backstretch and three or four gears for the hairpin on the front straightaway. This is unquestionably the quickest circuit in the NASMOTO program.
The dirt section was laid out in a ‘J’ format by Stateline SuperMoto promoter Marche Krager. Krager designs the dirt segments for the AMA Supermoto Championship and created the Nashville section close to the stadium seating with two table top jumps, two bowl turns and two whoops. The design provided multiple lines and exciting passing.

SMX/SM250 Final
The combined SMX 250 and SM2 250 race provided flag to flag racing action. Brandon Dooley got the hole shot on his Yamaha going into the hairpin and then lost his momentum and the lead going over the Part Unlimited Urban Jump to Kawasaki-mounted Chase Guthrie. Guthrie bobbled in the dirt and lost the lead and then a lap later got it back.
At the 3/4 point the running order was Chase Guthrie, Jason Hine and Brandon Dooley. As the eight lap affair ran down, Guthrie built an unstoppable 20 second advantage. On the white flag lap Dooley slipped past Hine on his KTM to take second.
The 3rd annual 07 Extreme Cycle Jam NASMOTO contingency awards were provided by Metzeler, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and KTM. Podcast and Vidcast interviews of racers were provided by NASMOTO at www.nasmoto.com.

Open PRO ATV Final and Open Amateur ATV Final
The combined ATV Open and ATV Amateur held the surprise of the meet with KTM unveiling the new KTM XC 525cc racer at the 3rd annual 07 Extreme Cycle Jam NASMOTO contest in Nashville at the Music City Motorplex on September 2nd.
Tim Farr flew in from Europe to attend the affair and came out of the box blazing. He took pole position, got the hole shot and won the contest while leading every lap, providing the ultimate trifecta to introduce the new racing ATV.
Farr got the lead with the 2006 defending champion, Nicolas Granlund, tucked in behind him. The two racers ran in lock-step for many laps until Granlund bobbled in the dirt section and lost his rhythm.
Farr motored away and took the checkered flag in this 10 lap event.
“I’m a little down on horsepower to the new KTM and I am 30 pounds heavier than Farr,” explained second place finisher Granlund. “I have to hand it to Tim, he rode an outstanding race.”
“The new KTM XC is ready to race,” said race winner Tim Farr. “Enthusiasts don’t have to sink a bunch of money into this quad to make it ready to go, it truly comes ready to race.”
Taking 3rd in the race was SuperMoto regular Zac Willett riding his Duro Tire ATV.
The $3,000 purse had SuperMoto racers converging on Nashville from both coasts. First place paid $1,200 with pros receiving payouts down to 5th place.

Yearwood raced his Yamaha to first place with Honda racer Tim Marks passing the stripe in 2nd and David Warmker coming home in 3rd.

SM1 Final
Dillon VanWay got the hole shot while Corey North slotted into second. North was looking racey until he stalled his KTM in the dirt section. North clawed his way back to the front riders and made a pass on Michael Stapula but couldn’t make it stick. Dillon VanWay came home in first with Stapula and North rounding out the podium.
Open Amateur Final
Michigan-based Michael Stapula, mounted on a KTM, got the hole shot as local hero Ryan Yearwood of Precision Motorsports slotted into 2nd position. Doug Farrar was in third and charging. Farrar showcased his roadracing skills on the asphalt but lost time in the technical dirt section. Farrar eventually stalled on the dirt and dropped out. Stapula took the win with Yearwood second and Gary Gasper of Torrence, CA taking the last podium position.
Vet +35 Final
Chad Phipps got the hole shot on his KTM racebike and pulled a 10 second lead after the first lap. Doug Farrar started second and slotted in third at the hairpin, pulled a rider at the urban jump and started off after Phipps. Chad Phipps was not to be denied on Sunday and ran off and hid for the win. Doug Farrar took second and Gary Dick took third.
