NASMOTO SuperMoto Round 5 Recap of Sarnia

Festival of Horsepower Had Everything - Rain, Sun, Mud, Speed & Action!

Steve Beattie, the retired hard-charging AMA Grand National racer, promoted the Festival of Horsepower and NASMOTO qualifier at Sarnia, Ontario on August 12th with racers coming from several provinces of Canada and northern United States to mix it up.

Only an hour outside of Detroit, MI, the Hiawatha Horse Park and Entertainment Centre hosted 125 competing in nine classes on the 70 percent asphalt and 30 percent dirt section.

Beattie oversaw the dirt section build that featured four bowl turns, an 8 whoop section and a step up table top. On hand to assist in the build was renowned track builder Justin Thompson.

The changing weather provided a lot of excitement for the racers. Mid-morning showers turned the dirt into ice and shut it down. As the skies cleared the road racing faction were leading the way during qualifications. Meanwhile Beattie got onto his quad and chewed up the dirt section to dry it out. Once the racing started it was back to the full track and the racers with both dirt and asphalt skills ran to the front.

The fastest racing was red flagged in the SMX Pro Open due to Jonathan Cornwell crashing and dislocating his shoulder. Promoter Beattie helped Cornwell snap his shoulder back in time for him to run the SMX 450 race, place a solid third and witness the fight of the day.

The SMX 450 race was a barn burner with Maxime Sylvetre and Aaron McDonald mixing it up. Sylvetre is considered to be one of the fastest SuperMoto racers in Canada and showed better form in the dirt. Knifing through the dirt section, trading plastic and block passes kept the fans on their feet until McDonald pulled a pass on the asphalt on the last lap and took the checkered flag.

A few weeks ago motocross racer Tim Martin tried SuperMoto and liked it. He hooked up with his friend and promoter Steve Beattie and borrowed his bike for the SM1 Open. He slowly got up to speed and was practicing well until the bike had a mechanical. Steve’s brother Doug, defending #1 plate, offered his bike due to a wrist injury. Martin was leading the race with three laps to go until a nut backed out on the slipper clutch and ended his day with a DNF. Beattie ripped the clutch out and fixed it in time for the Vet class where Martin lead the first five laps until fast man Dave Arnold slipped by for the win and Martin took second.

Young Gun Emerson Connor riding a 250 KTM in SM2 250 put on a clinic and won the contest by leading flag to flag.
